The department of Surgical Oncology, Kasturba Medical College is established in 1992. It is an internationally acclaimed center for cancer treatment and research, catering to the needs of people of the state of Karnataka and adjoining parts of Kerala and Goa. The department has several innovative and pioneering work in cancer control, treatment, research and training. The department located in the Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Centre And 365体育投注--官网直营网站@ block and is a part of 365体育投注--官网直营网站@ Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre with full-fledged departments of Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pediatric Oncology, Palliative Medicine and Nuclear Medicine and supported by allied services such as Plastic surgery, Critical care medicine, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Radiology, Microbiology and Transfusion Medicine.
Average 500 major oncological surgeries are performed by the department in a year.? The spectrum of surgeries includes basic, advanced and supra major complex resections and reconstructions. Routine operations include procedures for head and neck, breast and gynecological cancers.? Major procedures performed are all types of esophageal cancer surgeries, hepato-pancreatico-biliary cancer surgeries, upper and lower Gastrointestinal cancer surgeries, lung and mediastinal tumor resections, limb salvage surgery, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Pelvic exenterations etc. Minimally invasive cancer surgeries include advanced laparoscopic and VATS (thoracoscopic) surgeries.
The department caters to the teaching requirements of undergraduates and postgraduates of KMC, 365体育投注--官网直营网站@ and Mangalore. Cancer research has been an integral part of our journey with several publications and ongoing projects.
We are now glad to introduce a ‘Fellowship in Onco-surgery’, which comprises of ‘training in open Surgical oncology procedures as well as Minimally Invasive Surgery’. Fellows will be exposed to a large volume of complex surgical conditions and will be involved in the initial evaluation of new patients, treatment planning, multidisciplinary approaches through tumor board, design of the surgical approach, and postoperative and long-term follow-up care.
